Maryborough Advertiser – January 2014

Welcome to 2015 and thank you to the Ripon community for electing me as your local member. You have given me the great honour of representing you. During the campaign I promised you I would work for you and I recommit to that promise. I know you will hold me to account, as is your right and duty.

Welcome to 2015 and thank you to the Ripon community for electing me as your local member. You have given me the great honour of representing you. During the campaign I promised you I would work for you and I recommit to that promise. I know you will hold me to account, as is your right and duty.

I made my inaugural speech to Parliament in the days before Christmas. I made this speech as a newly elected member of the Opposition. This is the job the people of Victoria have given my party for four years.  As a member of the Opposition I will continuously be urging the Andrews Labor Government to support what is in our region’s best interests.

This has already started following the Moyston/Maroona fires. One day after the fire, Brad Battin, the Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, toured the fire affected areas with me. We talked with local community members and emergency service volunteers during the transition from emergency to recovery efforts.  Brad and I called on the State Government to waive the land fill levy to assist affected property owners. It was very pleasing to see our calls heeded.

I promise to you that I will spend the next four years continuously fighting and advocating for the needs of our local community. There is much to be done to make sure Maryborough, and the entire Ripon electorate, can prosper so we can all enjoy the great quality of life available to us in the country.

In recent years Maryborough has successfully attracted new businesses and employers. One of my priorities is to assist Council and local agencies to increase momentum for additional jobs growth.

In Maryborough during the campaign I announced that a re-elected Liberal Government would fund $2million to continue the incredibly important Go Goldfields project. Labor later bowed to community pressure and matched this commitment.

I will not stop fighting until the full amount for this project is funded. This is a fantastic Council and community led initiative which has enormous benefits to the local community by improving social, education and health outcomes for children, youth and families. I call on the State Government to honour the commitment to fund this vital local project.
