Member for Ripon Louise Staley has accused the Andrews Government of neglecting country Victoria after it was revealed this week that 10 of the 48 bridges earmarked for upgrades under Labors Stronger Country Bridges program are located within 4km of Premier Daniel Andrews’ own Melbourne based electorate.
Daniel Andrews said on the 19 February 2015:
“This $35.8 million in funding will be fast-tracked to strengthen 48 bridges in regional Victoria.” (Source: Media release)
Ms. Staley said the electorate of Mulgrave is just 20km from the Melbourne GPO. For Labor to claim this as regional funding is both wrong and telling.
“This is yet more evidence that Daniel Andrews runs a City-centric government that doesn't care about important infrastructure in regional areas.” Ms. Staley Said.
“Daniel Andrews scrapped the former Coalition Government’s Country Roads and Bridges Program cutting $28m from Ripon's roads and bridges and instead announced a single bridge upgrade across all of Ripon.”
“Labor is not just neglecting country Victoria - it is actively trying to mislead country Victorians who naturally think a program called Stronger Country Bridges means bridges in the country.”
Shadow Minister for Roads Ryan Smith said Daniel Andrews’ Stronger Country Bridges Program has been exposed as a complete farce.
“Daniel Andrews seems content to raid the Stronger Country Bridges Program to benefit his own suburban electorate while ignoring country Victorian electorates.” Mr. Ryan said.
“As with the East West Link, Daniel Andrews like to play politics with important infrastructure decisions.”
