Liberals to invest $20 million on rural level crossings

Member for Ripon, Louise Staley will fight to ensure all level crossings on the reopening Maryborough-Ararat Railway line are upgraded as part of the Victorian Liberals $20 Million commitment to make level crossings safer.

An elected Liberal Government will provide $20 million to make country level crossings safer. The money will be used to upgrade crossings to ‘active’ protection – flashing lights and/or boom gates.

The money will be provided from the Port of Melbourne lease proceeds.

Ms. Staley said the commitment is in stark contrast with the Andrews Governments decision to focus on only upgrading Level Crossings based in Melbourne.

“The lives of country drivers are just as valuable as those in the city.” Ms. Staley said.

“The Pyrenees Highway has several level-crossings that need upgrading. I’ll be fighting to get them done before the line reopens, but irrespective, the next Liberal Government will make sure they are safe if Labor fails to act”.

“Upgrading level crossings will help to balance out the funding divide between Country Victoria and the city caused by a Melbourne obsessed State Government”.

“While Daniel Andrews believes in removing level crossings in Melbourne only, the Liberals will remove level crossings across all of Victoria.”

David Hodgett MP, Shadow Minister for Transport said safety on the roads should not be privilege reserved for Melbourne motorists.

“Daniel Andrews has once again talked big but failed to deliver. The safety of country level crossings should not have to suffer because of Daniel Andrews’ all talk and no action attitude.” Mr. Hodgett said.

“Safety at country level crossings will be a high priority under a Liberal Government, unlike the situation under Daniel Andrews and his city-centric government.”

“The Liberals will ensure that those travelling on country roads and country trains are safe through a commitment to improving safety at country level crossings.”
