Ripon MP Louise Staley has welcomed news that a Liberal Government will suspend Daniel Andrews’ botched rollout of wire rope barriers and undertake a review of the process.
The Victorian Liberal Party acknowledges that wire rope barriers can prevent some serious accidents if installed correctly. However, the process has been rushed and mishandled under the Andrews Government.
We are concerned that the latest round of wire rope barriers are being installed in the wrong places and without proper planning and making some roads more dangerous instead of safer.
Some of the specific concerns about the latest installations include:
- Impeding access and maneuverability for emergency services;
- Compromising motorcycle safety if a rider connects with the barrier;
- Wire Roper Barriers installed too close to the side of the road that inhibits drivers pulling over safely due to a flat tire or a breakdown; and
- Considerable vegetation growth under the barrier rope which pose a significant fire risk and maintenance issues.
The review will include consultation with key stakeholders such as the CFA and RACV to determine a common sense approach to the placement and extent of future Wire Rope Barriers implementation.
Member for Ripon Louise Staley said an all-encompassing review would get to the bottom of this issue.
“Daniel Andrews has enforced wire rope barriers on our roads without any consultation; a review will look at all factors and will give our community a chance to have its say”. Ms Staley said.
“Lazily installing wire rope barriers without removing the old barriers, ignores the guidelines set out by VicRoads and leaves no space for drivers to pull over safely. This practice needs to stop”.
“While Daniel Andrews pours millions into erecting wire rope barriers, our local roads continue to decay and fester.”
Victorian Liberal Leader, Matthew Guy, for Roads, said the Premier for Melbourne has botched the installation of Wire Ropes Barriers, and it is putting motorists and emergency services at risk.
“Daniel Andrews governs for Melbourne’s inner-suburbs, a Liberal Government will govern for all Victorians. Mr Guy said.
“A picture tells a thousand words and these images clearly show that the government has botched the installation of these wire rope barriers and instead of saving lives it’s putting lives at risk.”
