New ABS data released yesterday paints a terrible picture of the widespread neglect by the Andrews Labor Government of Western Victoria. (source ABS 6291.0.55.001 Labour Force, Australia, Detailed - Electronic Delivery)
Since the election of the Andrews Labor Government the total number of employed people in the North West Victoria Region (including Ararat, Stawell, St Arnaud, Charlton and Donald) has fallen by 8,537. The participation rate, which is the percentage of people in the labour force out of the total adult population has fallen from 70.3% to just 61%, a fall of 9.3% as 10,654 people across the North West Region have either left the district or withdrawn from the labour force. This is a terrible cost to the lives of so many families and workers in the North West Victorian Region.
The Member for Ripon Louise Staley slammed the Treasurer Tim Pallas for gloating about the unemployment rate in the North West Region when the total number of employed people in the region has fallen by 8,537. “That’s 8,537 families who have lost an income earner and 8,537 people not employed in the region who used to have a job under the previous Liberal Government.”
“For the Treasurer to crow “that there are jobs being created throughout the state” when 8,537 people have lost their jobs in the North West Region alone is heartless and shows how out of touch the city-centric Treasurer and Government is. Across the Ballarat Region (including Ballarat, Maryborough, Beaufort, Creswick, Clunes and Avoca) the unemployment rate has increased since the Andrews Labor Government took office. The number of unemployed men in this region is up by 578 since the election in November 2014. At the same time, the number of employed people has fallen 3,716 as jobs are lost across the Ballarat region.
Earlier this week, the other major source of government data – the Small Area Labour Markets Data – showed the same pattern across Hepburn, Loddon, Pyrenees, Buloke, Central Goldfields, Northern Grampians Shires and Ararat Rural City. Member for Ripon Louise Staley said the government clearly has no economic plan or jobs plan for Western Victoria.
“The Andrews Labor Government has no economic plan or jobs plan for regional Victoria.”
“Daniel Andrews is running a Melbourne- centric government that doesn’t care about regional Victorians.”
“At a time when we need to be creating job opportunities, Daniel Andrews is all talk and no action.”
“By contrast, the Liberals have a Population Taskforce working hard on a plan to manage our states population to drive economic growth and create new job opportunities throughout all of Victoria” Ms Staley said.
